Statement from Bill de Blasio Promoting Local and Minority/Women Business Enterprises

July 30th, 2009

Councilmember Bill de Blasio released the following statement regarding yesterday's passage of Resolution 1773-A and Resolution 1977. Resolution 1773-A calls on the State to pass legislation (A6807/ S3185) authorizing New York City to award contracts to minority and women owned businesses at a cost premium up to 10% above the lowest bid; Resolution 1977 calls on the State to pass legislation (A7369/ S3514) authorizing New York City to award contracts to small, local businesses at a cost premium up to 10% above the lowest bid.

City Nears Deadline to Raise Day Care Pay or Lose Subsidy

"The city is playing with fire," said Bill de Blasio, a city councilman from Brooklyn who is chairman of the Council's Committee on General Welfare. "If the city gambles here and loses, we stand to forfeit $500 million in child care funding. Maybe the city thinks the state and federal government will back down, but there is no reason they would. The rules are crystal clear."

City, State Point Fingers, Low-Paid Women Left Hanging

The state, through the city's children's services agency, ACS, was going to pay them market rate for their efforts. More than a year later, says Brooklyn councilman Bill DeBlasio (who held court about it on the steps of City Hall today), these workers, mostly low-income women, haven't been paid.

Brooklyn hospital cutbacks leave pregnant women, rape victims in crisis

"I would like LICH and the community to become partners," said Councilman Bill de Blasio (D-Brooklyn Heights), chairman of the City Council's general welfare committee. "For that we need a detailed plan, a budget, so the community can discuss what is needed and how it can be provided. The hospital must work with the community to create a long-term plan for combating its financial problems."

Closure of Hospital's Obstetrics Unit Is Criticized

"There's been a bigger pattern in Brooklyn in recent years of hospitals closing maternity wards or closing altogether, which really has reduced the availability of maternity services," a City Council member of Brooklyn, Bill de Blasio, said. He said he plans to ask the state's Department of Health to analyze the hospital's proposal and "tell us whether our community can survive this move."

Officials Urge LICH To Reconsider Cutbacks

Some of Downtown Brooklyn’s most powerful elected officials, led by Councilman Bill de Blasio (D-Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill), gathered across from Long Island College Hospital to criticize the hospital’s recent decision to cut its bed capacity by about half, sell several of its buildings, and phase out its obstetrics unit.
