Statement from Bill de Blasio Praising Governor Paterson's Increased Support for Needy Families

July 8th, 2009

"This month hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers living in poverty will receive a much needed boost in their welfare grants.  For almost twenty years welfare grants have remained at a bare-bones level while prices and the cost of living have skyrocketed.  I applaud Governor Paterson for having the courage to support New York City's low-income families who, now more than ever, need our help to stay on their feet."

May 5th, 2009

NEW YORK - Councilmember Bill de Blasio today held a hearing to examine the Department of Homeless Services' (DHS's) practice of sending homeless New Yorkers into unsafe and illegal boarding houses that at times board up to fifty people in one family home.  The hearing entitled, "Is there a Shadow Shelter System?" featured testimony from homeless adults who had been sent by DHS into these boarding houses and evidence showing that the City has subsidized these illegal facilities.  De Blasio has introduced legislation prohibiting DHS from continuing this practice.

NYC to Receive $841 Million in Extra Food Stamps

DEBLASIO: In many other areas the mayor has been very good at getting people on food stamps. A number of his other policies have been very progressive in this area, so I don't know why the administration clings to this it doesn't make a lot of sense to me it never has but in this moment it makes much much less sense given the depth of the economic crisis.
