Brooklyn - Today, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) Political Action Committee APAC announced its endorsement of Bill de Blasio for Public Advocate in 2009. APAC will join De Blasio in his grassroots campaign, and will launch an aggressive field effort to communicate with its members and recruit volunteers for the campaign.
“Protecting New York’s children must be a top priority, and I urge the state legislature to reintroduce and pass, and Governor [David] Paterson to sign into law, this vital legislation.”
City Hall - Today, Council Member Bill de Blasio and Council Member Letitia James released the following statements regarding Judge Charles P. Sifton's decision to deny the plaintiffs' motion for summary judgment.
“As a public school parent, I am intimately familiar with the frustrations of mayoral control,” said City Councilmember Bill de Blasio. “For the past several years we’ve been dealing with a complete information black hole when it comes to education. We can no longer let one man make all the decisions. In the months ahead, we must work with the state to create a system that has greater accountability, transparency, and community involvement.”
City Hall – Today, Councilmember Bill de Blasio introduced legislation (Reso # 1771) in the Council calling on the state legislature to reintroduce and pass two bills that would create 39 additional Family Court judgeships throughout New York State. January 11th will mark the three-year anniversary of Nixzmary Brown's tragic death. Nixzmary's death resulted in a surge of abuse and neglect reports in New York City, and the Family Court system is still in crisis.
"The people of this city are angry. They are frustrated the mayor and council acted against their will and they want the right to decide this issue," said City Councilman Bill de Blasio.

The two council members — Bill de Blasio and Letitia James, both of Brooklyn — had argued that the public deserved to have an independent body decide whether it was a conflict of interest for council members to essentially determine their own political destiny. But the city argued that council members are merely being asked to make a tough decision, which is their job.
Councilmember de Blasio said: “I am deeply disappointed by the outcome of yesterday’s vote. Public involvement in the democratic process must not be taken lightly, or treated as some kind of “luxury.” New Yorkers twice voiced their opinions on term limits, and yesterday their will was subverted. Today marks the beginning of a process to reverse the great wrong that was committed at City Hall and to restore New Yorkers’ faith in government.”
