Exploration of Carroll Gardens Historic District Expansion Moves Forward Thanks to Bill de Blasio

July 22nd, 2009

BROOKLYN -- The Brooklyn Preservation Council today announced the submission of a photo project intended to support efforts to explore expanding the Carroll Gardens Historic District. The project was done with the guidance of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and funded by a grant from Councilmember Bill de Blasio. These photos of the neighborhood are an important step in the designation process for historic districts and help enable the Commission to decide which parts of the neighborhood might be worthy of designation.

Driven Mad by Park Tix Blitz! Bill de Blasio and Merchants Say Enough

De Blasio charged that while other city agencies are under a hiring freeze, Mayor Bloomberg's plans to hire 200 additional traffic agents shows aggressive ticketing is "part of a revenue strategy" to prop up the shrinking city budget.

De Blasio Responds to Mayor Bloomberg's Comments on Homelessness at WFP Candidate Forum

July 2nd, 2009

"At tonight’s Working Families Party candidate forum, Mayor Bloomberg claimed that more people are choosing to stay in homeless shelters because they have become more attractive during his tenure. It is insulting to the almost 35,000 people who spent last night in a shelter to say that they were there out of choice, not out of necessity. I am running for Public Advocate because we need real solutions for our City’s homeless population, not out of touch excuses,” said Bill de Blasio.

City Council to Pass Quinn and de Blasio Resolution to End Policy of Charging Rent to Homeless

NEW YORK – The New York City Council today is set to pass a resolution introduced by Speaker Christine Quinn and Councilmember Bill de Blasio in support of state legislation that would end the City’s policy of charging rent to homeless families.  The resolution calls on the state legislature to pass legislation S. 5605-A/A.8353-D, introduced by Assemblyman Keith Wright and Senator Daniel Squadron.

Architecture and Discovery Bring Brooklyn House of Detention Lawsuit Back to Court

“In the middle of an economic crisis, Mayor [Michael] Bloomberg is throwing tens of millions of dollars out the window. It defies common sense to prematurely toss money into a project that has been halted by the courts, is completely unnecessary, and may never be built,” De Blasio said in a statement.

Statement from Bill de Blasio on Bloomberg's Bedford Atlantic Armory Plan

June 25th, 2009

“The Bloomberg administration is hurting our neighborhoods instead of providing real solutions for the homeless.  The majority of homeless New Yorkers on the streets live in Manhattan, not Brooklyn. Replacing a Manhattan intake center with a Brooklyn intake center is simply bad policy.  This is a counterproductive plan that will only make it harder for homeless people on the streets to find shelter.  The Mayor needs to consider what is in the best interest of all five boroughs and homeless New Yorkers.”
