Uniformed Fire Officers Endorses Bill de Blasio for Public Advocate

NEW YORK - The Uniformed Fire Officers Association Local 854, I.A.F.F. today announced its endorsement of Bill de Blasio in the runoff for Public Advocate. The Uniformed Fire Officers Association (UFOA) represents over 7,200 lieutenants, captains, battalion chiefs, deputy chiefs, medical officers and supervising fire marshals of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). To date, de Blasio has been endorsed by 26 unions, representing over 700,000 current and retired members across New York City.

"I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association.  Keeping our communities safe is government's foremost responsibility.  New York City's firefighters and officers put their lives on the line to protect us, and as Public Advocate I will fight for them each and every day," said Bill de Blasio.

"Bill de Blasio has a long history of fighting to protect and preserve vital firefighting services in New York City, and the UFOA is proud to endorse him for Public Advocate. Over the next eight days, we look forward to working with Bill's impressive coalition to bring independent leadership and a strong voice for the needs of all New Yorkers to City Hall," said Captain Al Hagan, President of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association and a thirty-six year veteran of the FDNY.

In this year's budget, de Blasio successfully saved 16 firehouses the Mayor threatened to throughout the City, including engine companies in Brooklyn, Staten Island, Manhattan, and the Bronx.  De Blasio and his colleagues in the City Council successfully opposed these cuts, helping to ensure that communities remain safe and response times stay low.

In May 2003, the City closed Engine 204 in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, along with 5 other firehouses. In 2004, de Blasio successfully organized to keep the property of Engine 204 in the City's hands, after the Mayor tried to sell it off as a private residential building. The engine house is now leased to the Brooklyn Philharmonic so that this vital community resource is not lost forever.

De Blasio has also been endorsed by the Uniformed Firefighters Association, which represents 20,000 active and retired New York City firefighters, the New York City Fire Marshals Benevolent Association, and actor and former firefighter Steve Buscemi.
