New York – Bill de Blasio today announced that he has reached over one hundred endorsements, as his campaign for Public Advocate enters the final two months before primary day. De Blasio’s expanding coalition is one of the largest ever built in a contested citywide race, including endorsements from a wide range of elected officials, labor organizations, and democratic clubs.
“I have always believed that building a large and diverse coalition is the key to creating real change in government. Whether leading the charge against extending term limits last fall, or saving millions of dollars for public education, we must organize neighborhoods and communities to ensure the people’s voice is heard in City Hall. As Public Advocate I look forward to working with this broad coalition to guarantee that City government is working for the people, not against them,” said Bill de Blasio.
De Blasio has been endorsed by elected officials representing a diverse constituency of New Yorkers on the local, state, and national level. Most recently, he received the support of former New York City mayor Ed Koch. Koch joins a large group of fellow de Blasio supporters, including U.S. Representatives Yvette Clarke, Jerrold Nadler, Charles Rangel, and Edolphus Towns, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, and numerous State Senators, Assemblymembers and New York City Council Members. De Blasio has spent his career working with many of these City leaders to protect vital social services, save critical education funding, and ensure New Yorkers have access to much needed affordable housing.
Many of New York City’s largest and most prominent labor organizations have also endorsed de Blasio’s candidacy, citing his long track record of standing up for the needs of working New Yorkers in countless professions and industries. These supporters include the Working Families Party; ACORN Political Action Committee; District Council 37, the City’s largest union of municipal employees; the 500,000+ member service workers’ union, SEIU Local 32BJ; UNITE HERE; and the Communications Workers of America District 1.
In the Council, de Blasio has continually fought to preserve vital funding for public school classrooms and for firehouses across all five boroughs; in this year’s budget, he also successfully fought proposed cuts to 125 childcare center classrooms. Because of his extensive work throughout different boroughs, de Blasio has earned the support of the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island County Democratic Committees, as well as countless local Democratic clubs across the City. As Public Advocate, de Blasio will work with these progressive, community-based groups to organize their constituencies around key issues and create real change for New Yorkers in need.
