Give ID Cards To All New Yorkers

Last week, Colorado lawmakers approved legislation to issue driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants — making the Western state the fourth in the Union to approve such legislation. New York should become the fifth. Before this legislative session ends in June, Albany should pass a law enabling undocumented immigrants to secure a license. But we ought not wait for the state to act. Because New York City administers so many services vital to immigrant communities that require photo ID — libraries, rec centers, social assistance programs — we should develop our own municipal ID that opens all those doors as well.
